Lyme disease is a bacterial infection most commonly caused by a corkscrew-shaped bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi, also referred to asa spirochete. There are five subspecies of Borrelia burgdorferi, over 100 strains in the US, and 300 strains worldwide.
